Sports Medicine

St. Ann’s Family Medicine Residency has dedicated Sports Medicine Clinics for residents to work alongside our faculty, Jonathan Newsom, MD, CAQSM, who completed residency here at MCSA (‘19) and Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Louisville (‘20).

Our residents become comfortable with musculoskeletal medicine, physical exam and gain procedural skills while on this rotation. Residents also gain exposure to point of care ultrasound for diagnostic and interventional use within musculoskeletal medicine.

Sports Medicine Curriculum

Our Sports Medicine curriculum includes 2 one-month-long rotations, regular didactic sessions and procedural workshops, as well as sports-related volunteer opportunities to further enhance training.

  • PGY-2 residents spend one month in a private orthopedic surgery office, are involved in a multitude of musculoskeletal evaluations and procedures, and receive significant exposure to joint injections.

  • PGY-3 residents spend an additional month dedicated to Sports Medicine. This rotation includes time with non-operative primary care sports medicine physicians, caring for both adult and pediatric patients.

Community Outreach

Sports Physicals

Residents and attending faculty members travel as a team to local schools and perform free sports physical clinics several times per year, within our community.
