Fellowships: Academic Medicine – NEOMED; National Institute for Program Director Development

Hobbies: I am a huge CLE and OSU fan! I enjoy cooking with and for family and friends and have nearly perfected my homemade chicken nugget recipe. I love playing sports, including golf and tennis, and our family enjoys traveling, Hilton Head being our favorite destination. I am an avid podcast listener and enjoy watching movies and streaming series with my wife, kids and dogs.

Why SAFM: Seeing the growth and development of my residents is incredibly rewarding and inspiring. This role affords me the opportunity to guide residents through these formative years, helping them develop the skills, knowledge, and compassion necessary to provide great care to their patients.

I also love the close-knit environment of a residency program and the meaningful interactions with residents. While I enjoyed working in a busy FM practice for the first 10 years of my career, I missed working with students and residents. I decided to join the SAFM team because I knew there were great people involved with the program. I believe in the mission of MCSA and the community hospital setting is ideal for our program.

Fun Facts about Dr. Jonesco: One of my best adventures was hang-gliding in Brazil, landing on the Ipanema beach. The other, going down the Class V rapids of the Upper Gauley River. Despite my competitive nature in sports and games, I love being a couch potato more than anything.

Why SAFM: I was drawn to the culture of SAFM. The Faculty, Residents and staff make this program a wonderful place to work, it truly feels like a family here. Why SAFM: I love working with residents and medical students because trainees are always asking "why"! This serves the entire team in keeping up with updated evidence-based practice guidelines. I also love seeing trainees serve as advocates for their patients, and seeing a resident's continuity relationship with their patients grow over their three years of training.

I was first drawn to working at Mount Carmel because of our hospital system and program's mission: to serve as a healing presence in our communities, and to provide excellent care for all patients. I have stayed because of the family-like culture we maintain within the residency program, and the close-knit relationships with my resident advisees I have been fortunate to experience over the years.

Fun Facts about Dr. B: Although I have become a minivan mom, I still prefer to drive a manual transmission car. My husband and I have been known to home brew Kombucha on and off (off when my SCOBY needs to be revived...)!

Why SAFM: Having completed my residency with Mount Carmel and supported the program on and off throughout my career, I have strong collegiality with our program. Seeing a resident or medical student have an epiphany, seeing their confidence grow, and watching their skills develop are the best parts of my role as an educator.

Fun Facts about Dr. Berger: I am on a quest to see all US National Parks and as many outside the US as possible as well. I once unknowingly met Dick LeBeau on a golf course and said several disparaging things about the Pittsburgh Steelers before I realized who he was!!! (All turned out OK)

Why SAFM: After 10yrs of private practice, I was looking for a change and had an interest in teaching. SAFM had a full-fledged hospital service in a community hospital which I found similar to my prior job. I found the hospital and outpatient facilities to be modern and beautiful. The willingness of co-faculty to teach me about academic medicine also made the transition much easier. I have chosen to stay because since I arrived, we have added more quality faculty with varying interests that truly look out for the residents and take pride in their success. They are always striving to be better teachers as well as better doctors. The interactions between faculty, clinical staff, and residents are more like that of a family than co-workers.
